2019 Claude D. Hudson Award Winner – Professor Hung-Wen Liu

Professor Hung-Wen (Ben) Liu

Professor Hung-Wen (Ben) Liu, George H. Hitchings Regents Chair in Drug Design and Professor of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry at the University of  Texas, Austin, has received the 2019 Claude S. Hudson Award for outstanding contributions to carbohydrate chemistry in education, research, or applications.

Professor Liu received his B.S. at Tunghai University in Taiwan. He then moved to New York where he received his Ph.D. at Columbia University under the direction of Koji Nakanishi in 1981. Dr. Liu then carried out postdoctoral studies under Christopher Walsh. In 1984 he joined faculty at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where he remained for 16 years before moving tout Austin. Prof. Liu’s research focuses on mechanistic enzymology and the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. He has published over 270 papers and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Prof. Liu has won numerous additional awards for his work, including the Horace S. Isbell award (1993) and the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award (2014).
