The next International Carbohydrate Symposium (ICS 2022) will be held virtually in Brazil: July 10-15, 2022. Information is now available at https://ics2022.ciente.live.
The subsequent meetings are planned as follows, and further details will become available on the International Carbohydrate Organization (ICO) website: https://ico.chemistry.unimelb.edu.au/
2024 China 2026 Slovakia 2028 Canada 2030 Italy
2032 Taiwan 2034 Ireland 2036 Australia 2038 Japan
As you already know, in April 2019, the USACICS submitted a proposal to host an ICS in the USA in 2040. This proposal will be considered at the next in-person meeting of the International Carbohydrate Organization, hopefully during the XXXI ICS in 2024.
In 2021, the USACICS was able to provide sponsorship to both CARB and CELL Divisions, as well as Gordon Research Conference on Carbohydrates.
We all thankful to Dr. Nicole Labbe (former CELL representative) for her 7-year service on the committee and are happy to welcome Dr. Maren Roman as a new representative of CELL. The updated list of the Board of Directors of the USACICS is available below, and you are welcome to approach any of us with suggestions or comments.
Sustainability in a Changing World
CARB DIVISION SYMPOSIA:
Advancing Women’s Health in Glycoscience. This symposium will highlight areas of women’s health, in which approaches based on carbohydrate chemistry, chemical glycobiology, and glycosciences, broadly defined, are uniquely positioned to produce significant impact in understanding of gender-specific differences in glycome composition to minimize existing disparities in the treatment of commonly shared conditions (e.g, cardiovascular diseases, or diabetes). Bertram Oliver Fraser-Reid Memorial Symposium on Synthetic & Medicinal Carbohydrate Chemistry. This symposium will honor the career of Professor Bert Fraser-Reid and his groundbreaking developments in carbohydrate chemistry and biochemistry. The sessions will bring together both established and early career scientist in talks that will highlight work that was inspired in part by Professor Fraser-Reid’s creativity and many advancements in carbohydrate synthesis, reaction mechanisms, structure-activity relationships and therapeutic drug discovery for third-world diseases”.
Carbohydrate & Pathogens: From Fundamentals to Applications. Glycans are typically produced as heterogeneous mixtures in living systems, making the investigation of their specific functions or exploitation of certain structures difficult. To overcome this fundamental limitation, chemists have developed various methods for the selective addition, editing or manipulation of glycan structures. This symposium will feature a mixture of established and young investigators, as well as students and postdocs, that have created these methods and applied them to various areas of biology.
Oligosaccharide Synthesis, Conjugation, & Vaccine Antigenicity. Oligosaccharides, especially in the form of glycoconjugates, play vital roles in vaccines. In some cases, they can serve a as sources of protective antigenic epitopes that may be useful for the treatment or detection of cancer or infectious disease. In other cases, oligosaccharides they may shield the immune system from accessing antigenic protein epitopes. This symposium will feature advances in chemical, enzymatic, and cell free systems which enable to access to oligosaccharides or their glycoconjugates. In addition, some talks will focus on assessment of the resulting vaccines.
