Dr. Bertozzi earned her A.B. in chemistry from Harvard University in 1988. She completed her PhD in Chemistry at UC Berkeley in 1993 under the direction of Professor Mark Bednarski and latter performed postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Professor Steven Rosen at UC San Francisco. Prof. Bertozzi joined UC Berkeley faculty in 1996. She has been an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 2000 and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. In addition to other awards, she has been previously recognized with the Roy L. Whistler International Award in Carbohydrate Chemistry (2008) and the Horace S. Isbell Award in Carbohydrate Chemistry (ACS, 1997).
The Bertozzi group studies cell surface interactions that contribute to human health and disease with projects in the areas of cancer, inflammation and bacterial infection. Their lab uses a combination of organic synthesis, genetics and biochemistry as tools to study and manipulate cellular processes.
